Probably the richest birding area in SA due to all year round rainfall creating lush and evergreen conditions rich in wildlife. |

Mkuze and the Hluhlwehluwe-Umfolozi game reserves are the best in the sub-region for White Rhino and Nyala antelope. |

Birdlife comprising of storks, herons, egrets, ducks, geese, lily-trotters, crakes and rails is prolific throughout the perennial pan system with a total of over 400 species recorded. Maputoland is home to the Palm-nut Vulture. |

Good for crocodile and hippo in the larger lagoons and estuary systems. |
BEST TIME OF THE YEAR
April to September, to avoid the hot and humid months of the year, unless birding in which case October to March is best for migrants and resident species.
BUDGET
Self-catering as well as a broad mix of bed & breakfast establishments exist along with self-catering chalets in the Park and a number of medium priced hotels in the vicinity of the wildlife reserves.
GETTING THERE
Either overland along the coast or from the interior or by charter aircraft operating out of Johannesburg and Durban.
THINGS TO DO
Dune and estuary birding along the coast and within the pan system is excellent, particularly in the summer months.
Guided bush walks in the game reserves are recommended. Local bird guides are available by arrangement.
Waterbirds are plentiful within the pan and river systems. Crocodiles and hippos provide excellent photographic opportunity.
A sunset cruise up the St Lucia estuary is a ‘must do’.
Traditional tribal dancing is an added attraction to the wildlife portfolio.
Boat trips on Jozini Lake for tiger fishing and game viewing are available by prior arrangement.
Scuba diving off the Maputaland coast in the recently proclaimed marine park.
Extended trip inland to take in the spectacular heights of the Drakensberg Mountains and Zulu War battle fields.
WHERE TO STAY
Self-catering chalets within the game reserves. A wide range of accommodation options exist in Maputaland, including a number of extremely comfortable safari lodges in prime coastal habitat.
